About Us...
Chris
Martin has been involved with Drama all his
life. He qualified from Manchester University
with a BA Hons in Drama in 1989. He then taught
in a Middle School in Leeds for two years. Next
he moved to the coast becoming Head of Drama
at a secondary school in Bridlington, East Yorkshire.
After 9 years there he then moved across the
Pennines to Lancashire. In 2001 he took up another
‘Head of Drama’ post at a school in Bolton where
he’s teaching to this day…
Chris has
had a long involvement with amateur Drama. As
an actor himself he’s taken lead roles in many
plays and musicals including ‘Oliver’, ‘My Fair
Lady’, ‘Joseph’, ‘Me and My Girl’, ‘A Midsummer
Night’s Dream’, ‘Table Manners’, ‘Trivial Pursuits’,
‘Joan of Arc’, ‘A Man for all Seasons’, ‘The
Accrington Pals’, ‘The Class Struggle’ and ‘Woyzeck’.
As
a School teacher he has directed a number of
school productions such as ‘Grease’, ‘The Pirates
of Penzance’, ‘Burning Everest’, ‘The Dracula
Spectacula’, ‘Gregory’s Girl’, ‘Oklahoma!’,
‘A Taste of Honey’, ‘Oliver!’, ‘The Demon Headmaster’
and ‘A Christmas Carol’. Yet, as Chris’s work
in school has progressed, he’s become increasingly
more involved as a writer as well. In 1996 he
wrote and produced his first full scale musical
‘Wha-Hey!’ that told the story of a ‘boyband’
and their competition against a rival all girl
pop-group. In 1997 he won Scarborough College’s
‘Science and Drama competition’ with a piece
called ‘TV or not TV?’. In 1999 he won Hull
University’s ‘Pageant ’99’ with a play called
‘Amy, Wonderful Amy’. In 2000 a TV piece called
‘The Lesson’ won ‘Best Secondary Submission’
in Hull University’s ‘Screen 2000’ competition.
In Bolton in 2001, with a piece entitled ‘Breath’,
his new school placed second in the North West
region in Greater Manchester Police’s ‘On the
Beat’ competition staged at the Lowry. Thus,
working with school students, he’s had a long
tradition of writing successful theatre for
students! In 2006 he won a NODA best supporting
actor award
for his
role as
Smith in
'Murder
in Company' and the same award as Gruber in 'Allo Allo' in 2008. In addition he’s written a book of
poetry (with Jeremey Serlin) for young children ingeniously entitled
‘Snot!’ and is currently working on his first
novel ‘Hand-Pulled!’
Chris has long been
involved with murder/ mystery plays. During
his time in Leeds he ran a murder mystery Drama
company that specialised in performing pieces
in hotels in the West Yorkshire area. Onstage
he’s played the role of ‘Stone’ in ‘The Business
of Murder’ and ‘Smith’ in ‘Murder in Company’.
The idea for compiling a catalogue of self penned
mysteries began in Bridlington where he wrote
a play which was performed by staff as part
his school’s Centenary celebrations in 1999.
The astounding success of that event inspired
him to write further pieces to continue this
tradition for his present school in Bolton.
There, the ‘PTA Murder Mystery Evening’ has
proved an incredibly successful, enjoyable and
profitable addition to the fundraising calendar.
